Tricks of the Trade
If you spend too much time learning the tricks of the trade, you may not learn the trade.
There are no shortcuts. If you’re working on finding a short cut, the easy way, you’re not working hard enough on the fundamentals. You may get away with it for a spell, but there is no substitute for the basics. And the first basic is good, old-fashioned hard work.
John Wooden, from A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court
This was taken word for word from Coach Wooden’s book that I am currently reading. We are all guilty of shortcuts. Human nature tends to make us all try to find the quickest way to get results. I thought this topic was something to think about.
It is no coincidence that one of the next topics Coach discusses is titled “Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be.” No explanation needed. Again, something to think about.
